Depression can take many forms, including "high functioning depression" where it is can be hard to detect. Some typical symptoms of depression are anhedonia (loss of interest in things), weight loss or gain, hyper or hypo insomnia (excessive sleep or difficulty getting enough sleep), a lack of energy, difficult with focus, a sense of worthlessness or guilt and thoughts of death or actual thoughts of suicide. Depression impacts 6.7% of people in the U.S. which makes it the most common mental disorder. Although someone who is depressed typically feels that there is little hope, depression is treatable. Unfortunately this lack of hope can make it harder to reach out. A combination of therapy and antidepressant medication has been established as the best way to treat depression. However, therapy alone can also be an effective course of treatment for some people. Click below to learn more.
Anxiety and Stress - We all experience stress, but when is "stress" actually anxiety? When it impacts your day-to-day functioning and/or there is a significant physical component. Although anxiety includes aspects of worry and negative thoughts, it is also helpful to think of it as a physical issue. For many with anxiety it is helpful to consider the "fight or flight" response and how the body is activated to either fight the threat or run away. However, we cannot deal with most of our issues in these ways. Therefore we try to manage it in through our thoughts or use avoidance. This typically increases the symptoms of anxiety. Working with a therapist to address all of the symptoms - physical, cognitive, and emotional is an effective way of fully dealing with this issue.
